Natural Scorpion Control: Natural Ways to Kill Scorpions or Deter Home Entry

Scorpions can find their way into your home through small cracks inside your windows and doors. Once inside, their presence can be a danger to children and small animals in the home. They can also make even the toughest grown adult scream when they see one scuttling–or even jumping–toward them unexpectedly! To help guide you on scorpion removal, we’re highlighting our natural scorpion control tips in this latest post.

What Smells Do Scorpions Hate?

Scorpions actually have a very good sense of smell. One of the functions of their smell is to avoid potential harm. There are certain substances that would be toxic if consumed, so their instinct is to avoid them if they smell them. Below are a few natural scorpion deterrents.

Use Cedar Around The Home

The scent of cedar has long been used as a natural deterrent to prevent scorpions from entering specific areas. Cedar granules can be bought to ward-off scorpions, rats, and snakes from your property. Simply sprinkling them in areas within close proximity to doorways and windows is one of the best ways to naturally prevent scorpions from entering the home.

Use Cinnamon In Areas Across The Property

Like cedar, cinnamon is a scent that scorpions and many other bugs hate. If you sprinkle the product around the entryways to your home, you’ll likely to limit problems with scorpions throughout the year. Make sure you replenish the product every few weeks to maintain its freshness and ensure it retains its scent over time.

Get Out Your Essential Oils

Many types of essential oils can serve as scent deterrents, plus if used inside the home, they will leave a very pleasant scent. Some people have experimented with different scents, and it seems some are a lot more effective than others. Lavender, for example, is one of the most effective. Diluting an essential oil with a carrier oil can still have the same effect, and you can apply it to more areas.

If you want a particular potent combo, and you can bear the smell, try a cedarwood and lavender essential oil combo.

Home Remedies to Get Rid of Scorpions--For Good

If you would like to take scorpion control to the next level, you may want to consider ways to kill them. Below we have listed a couple of ways to kill scorpions using natural substances that are safe for children. Boric acid should not be used around pets, but diatomaceous earth can be. They can both usually be found at your local home improvement store.

Spray Scorpions With Boric Acid

This will be a slow, but effective way for the scorpion to die. Boric acid naturally occurs and is even found in fruit, but it is toxic when ingested by a scorpion. Since scorpions self-clean, they will most likely ingest boric acid if it’s sprayed on their body.

Another downside to this method is that it is not safe for pets (especially if you have a cat that could attack affected scorpions).

Sprinkle Diatomaceous Earth Around Outside

Diatomaceous Earth is completely safe for pets and children–just not scorpions and other pets. It’s a natural sediment made of crushed algae fossils.
